I now place the following item in my syllabi. IT signifiantly addresses the cell-phone issue, and the students love it. When the class size is 80 to 100 students, it means the penalty is not insignificant!

&quot;You are required to turn off your cell phone prior to the beginning of all lectures. If your phone rings during class the “penalty” is that you must provide the next time the class meets a Tim-bit for every student in the class. What this actually means is that you are encouraged to leave your cell-phone on: everyone else in the class will benefit!&quot;
