1. Scholarly approaches to the study of ancient society and early Jesus adherents and the problem of categories (e.g. “religion” and “ethnicity”)

Positioning Judeans and a Judean movement in a Greco-Roman context – Ethnicity, ancestral customs, and foreign “superstitions”

1. Defining ethnicity and ethnic identification: Discussion of reading in Harland

  • Social scientific approaches to ethnicity and identification (e.g. Howard 2000, Sanders 2007)
  • Constructed, ascriptive and fluid nature of ethnicity, not primordial or static (as often portrayed by participants or members).  Contrast nineteenth century notions of “race”.

1. Valentinus and Valentinian ideology and practice

2. Analysis of the Gospel of Truth

  • Key discussion questions: What passages stand out to you?  What do you see as the message of this writing?  What is the author trying to convince you of?  What images, metaphors and analogies does the author use to communicate his message and to explain the Father, the Son, and those in the know (the eternal ones)?  What is salvation and what are the various ways in which this is explained?
  • (1) Overcoming Error and ignorance to return to the Father (17.4-24.9 – pp. 242-247)
    • Ignorance of the Father is Error; knowledge makes error disappear
    • Role of Jesus, the Christ: Enlightens and brings truth: Jesus’ death re-interpreted  – Error grew angry at him (Valentinian forms still have a special place for Jesus’ death and there is no clear docetism here)
    • Humans: “those from above”  – knowledge brings ascent and return to the totality = Father; analogy of shaking off drunkenness and returning to oneself
